Tiama Saturn – New camera-based check inspection solution

Tiama Saturn – New camera-based check inspection solution

Tiama releases a unique camera-based check inspection solution called Saturn to replace traditional manual detection on carrousel machines.

Checks detection has always been a complex and time-consuming inspection to run on glass containers. Traditionally, LED modulated lights sources and digital sensors have been used to detect them. Upon job changes, it requires to set light and sensors angles accurately towards the area to be inspected. An oscilloscope display would confirm the right angle set up of each light and sensor combination. Even with highly experienced personnel, that guess work is impacting production downtime significantly without providing the most accurate results.

With 60 years of experience in non-contact vision technology, Tiama has developed the Saturn to revamp manual checks detection. With 6 to 11 wide-angle cameras (30mm * 15mm inspection areas) plugged on swivel arms, Saturn allows to detect checks on all container parts including finish, shoulder, base as well as body.

Once cameras are oriented towards the article, detection threshold and minimal check surface are the only 2 parameters that must be set up. As a result, job changes can be reduced significantly compared to standard manual technology. In addition, Tiama has implemented the Saturn into its latest user-friendly interface, making it even easier to set up.

At a pace of 350 BPM, Saturn can analyze up to 792 high-resolution images, allowing to catch the tiniest checks on bottles and jars. Production quality is kept at the highest level whilst false reject level is significantly reduced. Resorting often caused by checks defects can also be reduced by up to 90% compared to standard technology.

Tiama Saturn adapts to any container color, without dimensional restrictions. It can be installed on all Tiama carrousel machines, making it a versatile solution adapted to most production setups. The base offer starts with 6 cameras for finish & neck inspection and can be complemented with 3 body cameras and 2 base cameras for a full article inspection.

With the Saturn, Tiama now offers an easy set-up and high-performance alternative to standard checks detection options. It will become the standard choice for manual checks detection on Tiama carrousel machines while the renowned Tiama Atlas offers a fully automatic solution.

The Tiama HOT systems range pursues its development and can now handle multi-product lines

Multi product line management by the Tiama HOT systems have been developped

With more than 10 years of experience at the hot end, Tiama is now considered as a major supplier of hot end monitoring solutions. The company has launched in 2014 a full range of sensors dedicated to the hot end area in addition to its cold end products historically provided. Today, the Tiama HOT systems range consists of four sensors located in different areas around the IS machine from the gob with the Tiama HOT mass 2, to the exit of the IS machine with the Tiama HOT eye, the Tiama HOT form and the Tiama HOT move.

HMI multi product Tiama HOT systemsSince the launch of these products, several developments have been made and implemented on the Tiama HOT eye and the Tiama HOT form such as the integration of the Tiama HOT move features into the Tiama HOT eye software.

Many production lines are now equipped with these systems across the world. And, in order to be fully compatible with all the production lines, Tiama has recently developed the multi-product management on the Tiama HOT eye, Tiama HOT form and Tiama HOT move.

All our systems help to monitor and improve the glass process. Defects are detected at the hot end, allowing operators to perform quick corrective actions on the IS machine without waiting for cold end feedback. And thanks to the glass distribution analysis provided by the Tiama HOT form, defects creation can even be anticipated. In addition, ware handling is also improved with the Tiama HOT move. Jams on the production line are considerably reduced and pushers’ settings can be optimized thanks to the information provided by the sensor.

With this last development, mixed production lines now benefit from all the features available on the hot end sensors and the Tiama HOT systems range continues to grow with new features.HMI multi product Tiama HOT systems

Tiama HOT mass 2: Maintaining the highest standards of gob control

Tiama HOT mass 2 in plant

To ensure efficient production, consistent product quality, and environmental responsibility in the glass packaging industry, it is essential to focus on various aspects of the manufacturing process. Given that 80% of defects originate from gobs, according to glass manufacturers, monitoring them is a key step in improving process control. This level
of diligent surveillance also plays a central role in optimising glassmaking operations, reducing waste and maintaining brands’ high standards. The Tiama HOT mass 2 is the latest generation of Tiama’s hot end product range dedicated to gob monitoring. The inspection and quality control specialist’s new sensor was launched at glasstec 2022 to replace the original Tiama HOT mass and GIA [Gob Image Analyser] system.

Tiama HOT mass 2: the NEW generation of sensor for gob monitoring

The Tiama HOT mass 2 is the new generation of TIAMA hot end sensor dedicated to gob monitoring. Today, gob monitoring systems have become a “must have” for glass plants and monitoring the gob is a key step in improving process control as glassmakers usually say that 80% of the defects created come from the gob.

Thanks to its unique configuration, the Tiama HOT mass 2 provides real 3D views of gobs and accurate measurements for gob shape such as length and diameters. The control of the gob shape is essential to limit the creation of defects. The system also provides temperatures, falling angles and speeds measurements in real time.

The Tiama HOT mass 2
The Tiama HOT mass 2

The Tiama HOT mass 2 keeps the gob weight stable through two closed loops: the system regulates automatically the tube height and the needles positions. Performance achieved by the system is very promising. As an example, for a production with a weight setpoint at 955g, the Tiama HOT mass 2 regulates the gob weight within +/- 1g. Thus, weight limits can be set to a minimum and the weight setpoint reduced. A reduction of only 1g means significant savings for a glass factory. This automatic gob weight control frees up time for operators who can concentrate on more added-value tasks around the IS machine.

The limitation of carbon impact becoming a priority for factories, a better weight stabilization also helps to support plants in the production of increasingly lighter containers.

The Tiama HOT mass 2 is universal and can be connected to any kind of IS machine and process. The technology used by the system makes it possible to have a compact solution that can be easily installed and requires only very little maintenance.

TIAMA was the first supplier to offer gob monitoring sensors with the GIA and then the Tiama HOT mass. Many years of experience and installations around the world have made Tiama HOT mass 2 an efficient and ergonomic system that meets the customers’ needs.

Fully integrated in the YOUniverse concept, Tiama HOT mass 2 is compatible with the different information systems used by glass plants.

Thanks to the worldwide presence of its after-sales engineers, Tiama is ready to support you with the installation and getting started with the Tiama HOT mass 2.

Combination of Tiama HOT systems and Tiama ECO-System

For several years now, TIAMA has been one of the most important providers of solutions dedicated to the hot end. The Tiama HOT systems are sensors located all around the IS machine, from the gob with the Tiama HOT mass, to the exit of the IS machine with the Tiama HOT eye, the Tiama HOT form and the Tiama HOT move. Each sensor has specific features to meet different customers’ expectations, but all share the same electrical cabinet. With this modular approach, customers can gradually invest over the years to facilitate the integration of these systems into their plant.

In recent years, customer needs have changed in factories, and more and more of them want their different systems to be able to communicate with each other. To fulfill this need TIAMA has developed a solution called the Tiama ECO-System.

Tiama ECO-System is a web page available anywhere in the plant, gathering the different data from all the TIAMA machines. The Tiama HOT systems range is fully integrated into the Tiama ECO-System. Images of the articles rejected at the hot end by the Tiama HOT eye and the Tiama HOT form, and also by the cold end machines, the MCAL4 and MULTI4 are displayed in the “Gallery” menu of the Tiama ECO-System. In the “Analytics” menu, statistics of rejects by machines and detections are represented over time or by section or mold numbers. The Tiama ECO-System facilitates the link between the hot end and the cold end. It is even possible to link the cavity with the mold numbers and to apply the lehr time to get an accurate correlation between what happened at the hot end and at the cold end for the same batch of articles.

The customers’ feedback on Tiama ECO-System is already very positive and this solution is promising for the coming years with new features available regularly.

The combination of Tiama HOT systems and Tiama ECO-System is totally in line with Tiama overall strategy to develop solutions gathering and analyzing more and more data all over the plant.

It is also part of the Smart Glass Solutions provided by Tiama with its YOUniverse concept to support the customers towards Smart Factory.
